This female snowy owl was hurt when a vehicle clipped it at 80 kilometers an hour outside of Slave Lake on Hwy. 2. Fish and Wildlife Officer Dave Dickson (those are his hands) said the bird had no obvious injuries, but he was going to turn it over to the Alberta Society for injured Birds of Prey in Sherwood Park.
Snowy owls breed in the high arctic and move south into areas like ours over winter. They hunt rabbits and other smaller animals by day. Dickson figured this one weighed five or six pounds. Full grown they reach lengths of 22 inches.
