Winterhawks make hamburger of Jasper Wolves

akeside Leader It seemed ages since the last Senior hockey game in Slave Lake (it was Nov. 27). Fans who turned up hoping for something exciting didn’t exactly get what they came for, as the Winterhawks pulverized the Jasper Wolves by scores of 9 – 2 and 15 – 0. Or was it 16 – 0?
Saturday’s game was close for a while, until Jasper’s short bench started to tell. With 10 skaters they didn’t stand a chance and they knew it, icing the puck every chance they got. Still, Wolves’ goalie Joe Bartziokas was solid as a rock through the early going. Kyle Hansen scored the only goal on him in the first period.
Things opened up for the home team in the second. They went up 5 – 0 on two goals by Brent Blachford and one each by Hansen and Keith Sinclair.
Jasper finally solved ‘Hawks’ goalie Sheldon Ghostkeeper with a pair of goals in the third. Scoring for Slave Lake in that period were Scott Lawrence, Hansen and Ryan Dierker.
Referee Greg Gerard only called three penalties the entire game.
On Sunday Jasper had more players but less mojo, judging by the score. In fact it was the Winterhawks who were short-staffed but it didn’t seem to bother them. They scored eight times in the first and cruised to a 15 – 0 (or 16 – 0 – the gamesheet isn’t clear) victory. Ryan Dierker led the way with an eight-point effort. Jason Green had seven and Kyle Hansen six. Calvin Beauchamp got the shut-out in goal.
The Winterhawks visit Fox Creek on Saturday for a game against the Bandits.
