This Mackenzie Northern grain car went off the tracks in Slave Lake last Friday morning. The culprit was a broken axle, something that almost never happens, according to rail line manager Tim Husel. The wheel and half the axle are visible alongside the car.

Looking for Citizen of the Year nominations
It’s getting to be the time of year again where the community nominates candidates for Slave Lake’s Citizen of the Year. Jointly sponsored by the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre and The Leader, the award is given out in April at the Friendship Centre’s annual volunteer appreciation dinner.
Roland Twinn wins second term as Sawridge Chief
Chief Roland Twinn of the Sawridge First Nation was re-elected on Feb. 17. He defeated his challenger Elizabeth Poitras of Elk Point fairly easily.

Players crowd the net in the Pee Wee ‘A’ playoff game between the Slave Lake Elks and Westlock. Westlock opened up a 4 - 2 lead in the two-game, total-goal series. Earlier in the week the Elks qualified for provincials.

Kodiaks going places
The Slave Lake Kodiaks are going to the provincial Sr. ‘B’ championships, after beating the Grande Prairie Aces on Sunday. They’ll compete with teams from around the province at Black Diamond, Mar. 11 – 13.
School curlers to provincials
A local high school curling team won a berth in the provincial championships on the weekend. They did it the hard way, coming up from the ‘B’ side of the double-knockout draw to defeat Fairview two straight.
