Lakeside Leader A local high school curling team won a berth in the provincial championships on the weekend. They did it the hard way, coming up from the ‘B’ side of the double-knockout draw to defeat Fairview two straight.
Playing at the Alberta High School zone playdowns in Valleyview, the team of Scott Tradewell, Nikole Odynak, Trevor Eben and Sara Hughes played five games, losing only their first.
That loss was to Fairview, 6 – 5. That dropped them to the ‘B’ side where they crushed Grande Prairie 17 - 0 and Valleyview 9 – 0. That was good enough to win the ‘B’ side and set up a return match against Fairview, the winner of the ‘A’ side.
This time it wasn’t really close. The Slave Lake team won 9 – 2 and again 11 – 0 to win the tournament and a spot in the provincials in Camrose this weekend.
