Seniors, council eye same property
A request by senior citizens for a “temporary moratorium” on development plans for land adjacent to the Vanderwell Heritage Lodge was rejected by town council at a committee meeting on Tuesday.

Murder of Mounties hits close to home
The murder of four members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police last week on a farm near Mayerthorpe left its mark in Slave Lake. Mounties at the local detachment were coming to grips with the shocking news on Friday, even as talk in higher levels of law enforcement began on what should be done.

The 41st Annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel was played on the weekend. In event ‘A’, Option Machine, skipped by Keith Mielke, beat Cadastral Group One. In event ‘B’, Slave Lake Hotshots Two beat Precision Wireline. In event ‘C’, Silverline Power Tools beat Seguin Construction. In event ‘D’, Quinn Pumps beat C. E. Franklin. In event ‘E’, G. N. Transportation beat Weatherford Completion. First place winners received $800 each plus an Oilmen’s Association coat. Second place winners received $600 each. Above: Gary Evernden, Brian Evernden and Steve Pederson of G. N. Transportation play Weatherford Completion in the finals.

Winterhawks, Drayton Valley split first two playoff games
The Slave Lake Winterhawks were the stronger team in the two playoff games against the Drayton Valley Wildcats on the weekend. But the Wildcats had better goaltending, better luck and made more of their chances on turnovers.

Pee Wee Elks advance in league playoffs
The only Slave Lake minor hockey team going to provincials this season is also still alive in league play. The Pee Wee ‘A’ Elks made it so by beating the Westlock Krusaders on Saturday, in Westlock, in what their coach describes as “a barnburner, an awesome game.”
