Two Kinuso teams are out, but the Colts are back in. So the Southshore Men’s Baseball League has five teams for the 2005 season. Play starts Wed., May 25 at Charity Park in Slave Lake.
The regular season is 10 games, played Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The teams in the league this year are the Widewater Eagles, Boss Pressure Red Sox, Colts, Cardinals and Wabasca.
League official Harry Bartlett says Kinuso couldn’t come up with one team this year, let alone two. They might, “throw in the odd team for tournaments,” but couldn’t commit to league play.
Their plan is to take a year off.
Speaking of tournaments, the Widewater Sports Days tournament is June 10 – 12 this year, and chances of snow are slim.
Bartlett is looking for eight senior men’s teams and 16 mixed slowpitch teams to fill it up.
Then on the July 7 - 9 weekend, which is Riverboat Daze, there’ll be a, “really, really big tournament.”
By really, really big, Bartlett refers to the quality of the baseball, not the number of teams. He’s shooting for eight Senior and Junior teams from around the province, including one or two from Slave Lake.
