The Rotary Club would love to sell 200 ‘invitations’ to its May 14 Poker Night – to be held at an undisclosed location (that most everybody knows). Harry Bartlett was in the other day to say he’s got 145 confirmed sales (although not the money) so far. Don’t forget there’s a $2,500 travel voucher on the line, as well as dozens of other prizes. Call Harry at 805-0482 or Tyler at 849-9699 or drop in at Boston Pizza for more info.

It was an opportunity of a lifetime for a group of Grade 3 students from C.J. Schurter School. On Apr. 27 they got to perform for Minister of Education Gene Zwozdesky and other dignitaries at the Mayfield Inn in Edmonton for the annual meeting of the College of Alberta School Superintendents.
“It was absolutely amazing,” says Principal Robyn Ord-Boisvert. “They got a standing ovation.”
Thirty-three kids made the trip, performing in a choir, a hula-hoop routine and a jigging demonstration. They even stayed overnight – a big adventure for them, says the principal.
Having schoolkids entertain the superintendents and assistant superintendents is standard practice, but it’s usually a high school band or choir or something along those lines. High Prairie School Division Assistant super Barry Stangeland (whose job it was to pick the entertainment this year) wanted something a bit different, Ord-Boisvert says, and he got it.
“It was a really big hit,” she says.

Bryan Penner is getting his head shaved to raise money for cancer victims. His goal is to raise $10,000, but one way or another he’ll go under the clippers on June 1 at Kal Tire. If the total is up to $5,000 by then, Ryan Burchby will cut his hair too. If it gets up to $10,000 Pat McGill himself will submit to the clippers. For a donation of $500, you earn the privilege of shaving a strip of hair off the head you see in the accompanying picture. To get involved, call Kal Tire.

St. Peter’s Ecumenical Church is raffling off a goat, $5 at a time for its building fund. This news just in from Heather Baranyk, who called last Thursday. The idea is to buy tickets for whoever you’d like to end up with a goat.
The building housing the Anglican, Lutheran, United shared ministry is long overdue for an expansion. It seats about 100 and wants to expand to 300 seats. Grants of the lottery variety are unavailable due to church policy, so it has to do it by fundraising.
“This is just one little way to help us along,” says Baranyk.
Tickets can be purchased at Special Moments Flowers and Gifts. The draw for the goat is June 24th.
