Protesters of all ages lined up to wave placards and block entry to the Swan River First Nation administration building defying what they said was an illegally-called election for chief. Spokespersons said they want to clear up problems in the First Nation and its council so children won’t be left in the middle of family feuds and infighting. Protesters set up their barricades Aug. 20 to prevent an advance poll from happening, and maintained their opposition through the week and into Saturday when the election for chief was to take place.

Protesters block access to 'illegal election.'
A blockade was erected outside the Swan River administration buildings last Saturday (Aug. 20) by members supporting Acting Chief Leon Chalifoux and council who are attempting to wrestle back control from an election officer that resigned – and from what the council alleges is an ‘Old boys club’ on the Lesser Slave Lake Indian Regional Council that supports him.

One of the candidates running for the vice-presidency of the Metis Nation of Alberta, Trevor Gladue, is well-known around here.

The Sharks Swim Club sent more than a few team members to end of season provincial competition in Edmonton on Aug. 13-14. Here are the results of that competition plus some of the regional competition results that helped get them there.
