Voters favoured the incumbents in a Sept. 6 poll to elect leaders of the provincial and regional councils of the Métis Nation of Alberta.
The official vote count wasn’t available at press time, but the unofficial count shows the incumbents winningly handily.
Locally, Bev New returns as president of the Region 5 council. She received 319 votes. The only other candidate, Harold Augier received 89.
New issued a statement saying, “Please don’t feel that we only seek our membership at election time. Our office is open and I hope to see you soon.”
Peter Campion also returns as the Region 5 vice-president. He received 232 votes. The other candidate, Kim Courtoreille, received 164.
“Oh, I just feel super. It always a great feeling when you win an election because what that tells you is that people out there really have faith in you and they put their trust in you,” says Campion.
Trevor Gladue, who once lived in Slave Lake, will be serving a second term as the provincial vice-president after winning nearly 75 per cent of the vote. Gladue received 2,353 votes, compared to 791 for the challenger, Ephram Bouvier.
“I’m quite humbled by the amount of support,” says Gladue.
He says he will be meeting with the provincial council this week to talk about the MNA’s priorities for the next three years. In the short-term, renewing a framework agreement with the province on the delivery of services is top priority, he says. The resigning of that agreement is due to happen in April 2006.
