An estimated 350 students from Roland Michener Secondary School in Slave Lake hoped they’d raise at $7,500 when they took part in the National Terry Fox School Run Friday. Four schools took part, adding their totals to the $2,100 or so that 60 participants contributed in the 25th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run Sunday.

Boisvert's building for cultural centre?
Some rumours turn out to be true. One such is that the owners of the vacant Boisvert’s Super ‘A’ store in downtown Slave Lake offered it to the Town as space for a new library. That went by the boards, but more recently Stella Boisvert suggested to the mayor that it might make a good cultural centre.
Dealership pitches in for Katrina relief
Slave Lake resident Susan Gilliland has a family connection to the New Orleans tragedy. Her sister Doris Sinotte lives and works in the area hammered by Hurricane Katrina, and now Susan’s employer is organizing support for the beleaguered hospital Sinotte works at.

Midget-aged players were at it hard and fast in tryouts at the Arctic Ice Centre last week. There’ll be more of the same this week as players battle for spots on ‘AA’ and ‘A’ teams.

Minor hockey numbers down a bit
Registration in Slave Lake minor hockey stood in the 260-270 range last week as tryouts for the ‘A’ or ‘AA’ teams began.
That’s “down a bit from last year,” according to Slave Lake Minor Hockey Association President Patty Stephen.
Area residents anxiously await new dialysis centre
Three times a week, Joan Courtorielle must travel to Westlock for dialysis treatment that she can’t receive in Slave Lake.
Treatment at the dialysis centre begins at 7 a.m., so the 75-year-old resident of a south shore community west of Slave Lake must get up at very early in order to make the 300 kilometre round trip.
“I’m getting tired,” says Courtorielle.
