Slave Lake, Alberta

By-election for M.D. #124 council

James Boston
Lakeside Leader

Voters in the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River will be choosing a new councillor on Oct. 17 in a bi-election to fill a council seat left vacant after Councillor Ken Olson passed away last month.
Residents in Division 2, the northern half of the municipality that includes the Southshore, Mitsue and Marten Beach communities, are eligible to vote at polls taking place at the municipal district’s head office and at the Southshore Community Complex between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
There will be no advance polling.
Nominations for the vacant seat closed Sept. 19.
Two candidates have stepped forward.
Lorne Larson, who served three terms on council when the municipality was still a rural improvement district, and Marilyn Partington- Richer, the former editor of The Lakeside Leader, are both running.
Larson was first elected to council in the 1970s and served subsequent terms in the 80s and 90s. During one term, he served as chairman of the council, the equivalent of a reeve today.
Larson ran in the last municipal district election, losing by only two votes.
Partington-Richer is running for elected office for the first time, but she’s no stranger to politics. It’s safe to say she’s attended more council meetings than any of the sitting councillors.
Until last October, when she stepped down as editor of The Leader, she had reported on council news for more than 15 years.
