Five-year-old Carson Chykerda got a really big kick out of using a real fire hose at the Fire Prevention Week open house at the Slave Lake fire hall last week. Helping him man the hose was junior firefighter Lawrence Vanin. About 600 people turned up at the open house.

Seniors want answers on assisted living housing
Seniors in Slave Lake are getting impatient for answers about housing. They’ve been advocating for action on the need for an assisted living complex for some time, and until quite recently thought they were getting somewhere.

The union representing striking (or locked out) Telus workers calls it a legitimate tactic. To Susan McMann of Smith, picketing the homes of union members who’ve gone back to work is “kind of a cheap shot.”

Wolves get first win of the season
The Slave Lake Wolves won their first game of the season Saturday night, defeating the Sexsmith Vipers 5 – 4 in fine dramatic style. Down 4 – 2 in the third period, the home team scored three straight to take the lead and hung on to it for nearly nine minutes.
Winterhawks' season begins Saturday
Nobody seems to know much about the team coming to town this weekend to play the Winterhawks. The Onoway Icedogs are not just brand new in the league, they’re brand new in existence.
