Regional wildlife biologist Mark Heckbert holds a radio collar that was once around the neck of a bull woodland caribou of the Slave Lake herd. In his other hand is the antenna that picked up the signal. Likely killed by wolves or a bear, the caribou was one of a herd of fewer than 100 animals that survive in the muskeg areas east of Slave Lake. Their status is about to come even more into the spotlight due to discussions about a new resource bypass road from Hwy. 88 to the Mitsue Industrial Park, which Heckbert says he has serious concerns about. The collar was found a few hundred metres east of junction of Hwy. 88 and the Marten Hills Road - ideal caribou habitat, Heckbert says.

St. Mary turns students away
“It’s preposterous that students should be this crowded together in Alberta, the land of plenty,” says St. Mary of the Lake school council chairperson Lisa Meyer. “I think that more than 40% of the school is made up of portables. We need a new school.”

Wolves triple win total against Beaverlodge
Chalk up a two-win weekend for the Slave Lake Wolves, their first one in a long time.
The wins came courtesy of the Beaverlodge Blades, a struggling team that nevertheless managed to put up a good fight.
Two on the road for Winterhawks
Slave Lake’s Senior Men’s team took a trip to the mountains on the weekend. They came back with their perfect record intact, having scored 20 goals and allowed 10.
