The Slave Lake Wolves played a dandy period of hockey on Sunday against the Peace River Navigators. It was the kind of hockey they’ve showed at times this season in giving better teams a good scare and it happened again.
But it was too little, too late as the saying goes, and they ended up losing 5 – 2.
Against Sexsmith on Saturday, the result was much the same. A 6 – 2 loss against a team they’ve beaten once this season. Down 4 – 1 after one period, the Wolves had too far to go and they didn’t get there.
They certainly got the Navigators’ attention on Sunday though. Peace River was cruising at 3 – 0 when Michael Zinyk managed to squeeze the puck over the line just at the end of the second period. The Wolves came out fired up for the third and had the Navigators back on their heels for long stretches. When Chad Paulson’s point shot deflected in off a defenceman’s skate to make it 3 - 2, things started to get very interesting indeed.
Penalties helped the Wolves’ cause. Ref Chris Taylor handed Peace River nine minors to Slave Lake’s three. But the Navigators’ Brad Kerr doused the comeback when he scored to make it 4 – 2 and then 5 – 2 with a few seconds left.
The two losses drop the Wolves’ record to three wins and 10 losses. This weekend they host the Fort St. John Huskies for a pair of games at the Arctic Ice Centre.
