We ran out of space for an item that came out of the M.D. council meeting last week. It was a summary report of projects in the field by M.D. Director of Field Operations George Snider. It’s an impressive list of road work, bridge repair, water and sewer projects and the like, from one end of the M.D. to the other. We’ll summarize his summary in next week’s Leader.

Speaking of M.D. projects, Marilyn Cavanagh of the Community Development Corporation says her crew is ready to move into the new visitor information centre out on the highway. In fact they have to be out of their present location by the end of the month, whether the new place is ready or not. But it is more or less ready, according to George Snider. The only vital component missing last week was the telephone hookup. Snider said Telus was a bit tardy in getting the work done, but he expected it any day. Marilyn says the new offices are very nice and she and her staff are looking forward to working in them. Joining them in the new digs will be the Big Lake Country Tourism office.

The CDC, by the way, has videoconference facilities it is eager to make available to local groups. Videoconferencing isn’t quite the same as sitting down in the same room with the people you need to talk to, but it can get the job done without the hassle of traveling three or four hours for a meeting that lasts an hour-and-a-half.

There was a fairly large crowd at the Remembrance Day ceremonies on Friday, and nice weather too. The ceremony was moving as always. It’s a good thing, it seems, to have in a community. It reminds us of the responsibilities that come with belonging to a nation and a world, apart from the day to day stuff that occupies us most of the time. It also serves to remind us that war robbed (and continues to) a lot of young people of their lives.
