Widewater fire comes close to houses
A dangerous fire broke out in Widewater last week on Nov. 22, threatening several homes. It took the combined efforts of two fire halls and the local Forest Protection branch to knock it down before it damaged any structures.

Bigstone protests FMA renewals
Tolko Industries’ forest management agreement renewal – upon which its new Slave Lake mill depends – ran into a roadblock last week. The Bigstone Cree Nation is protesting the renewal, saying that it was not adequately consulted.

Sports Highlights

Slave Lake Midget ‘A’ goalie Ronson Laboucan managed to keep the puck out somehow on this play in the first period of a game Sunday against Jasper at the Arctic Ice Centre. The Jasper player had several bangs at it, but the luck was all with Slave Lake in the early going. They scored three times in the first four minutes of the game - all of them by Kyle Courts and went on to win 7 - 4.

Winterhawks lose their first
The possibility of a loss on the road is always lurking around the corner, and the Slave Lake Winterhawks ran smack into it in Lamont on Nov. 25. They dropped a 7 – 6 decision for their first loss of the season – also their first ever encounter with the Bruins.

Wolves get nowhere in Beaverlodge
Slave Lake’s two wins against Beaverlodge earlier this season seemed to be a breakthrough for the struggling team. In Beaverlodge this past weekend, it was more struggling for the Wolves and a breakthrough for the Blades.
