Slave Lake, Alberta

Wolves double trouble at home

Joe McWilliams
Lakeside Leader

Confounding the critics once again, the Slave Lake Wolves played excellent hockey on the weekend and beat two of the better teams in the league.
Saturday night they came from behind to beat the second place Peace River Navigators 4 – 3. Sunday they sent the third place Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks packing, 4- 2.
Penalties played a big role in the Saturday game. The Wolves started with energy, as they often do, and as also so often happens, things went wrong. A Wolves’ penalty led to a Peace River goal, followed fairly quickly by an even strength Navigators’ goal and it was a 2 – 0 game.
Could the Wolves rebound this time?
They could. Michael Zinyk snapped in a rebound on the powerplay to make it 2 – 1 and that’s how the first period ended.
In the second the Wolves played aggressively, creating plenty of chances that just never paid off. At the other end, goalie Pisim Johnson bailed them out several times when defensive breakdowns led to gift-wrapped Peace River scoring chances. But nobody scored and it was still 2 – 1 after two.
Aaron Franklin scored for the Wolves early in the third to tie it. Peace River regained the lead midway through the period but Franklin’s second of the game tied it at three, setting up overtime. Al Beaulac was the OT hero, getting Slave Lake’s third powerplay goal of the game.
On Sunday the Wolves got goals from Justin Dunlop, Dane Boisvert, Franklin and Sheldon Young – the latter one shorthanded. They gave up two powerplay goals in a penalty-filled affair.
Pisim Johnson was again the winning goalie for the Wolves.
