Slave Lake, Alberta

Local book shows off the natural beauty of the Lesser Slave region

Joe McWilliams

Why didn’t somebody think of this years ago? That’s what people might ask themselves when they pick up a copy of Four Seasons of Lesser Slave Lake, the new photo book by Miro Micovsky of Big Lake Country Tourism.
But nobody did, making ‘Four Seasons’ all the more special. It’s over 70 pages of excellent photos of the Lesser Slave Lake region, along with text – both courtesy of Micovsky, who has been Executive Director of Big Lake Country Tourism for five years. For the past year-and-a-half, he’s been packing his camera with him everywhere, missing no chance to photograph a stunning vista, a wildlife encounter or a local event.
The results are pleasant indeed. Micovsky obviously has a very good camera and knows how to use it. One photo from the top of Marten Mountain is alone worth the $12.95 price for the book. There are lots of other good ones too, that tend generally to show off the attributes of our area in an uncommon light.
Micovsky says proceeds from the sale of the book will go back into tourism promotion in Big Lake Country. That amounts to $9.95 per book, with $3 staying with whatever outlet sells it. The money that comes back to the tourism organizaton must be used for further marketing programs, Micovsky says. It’s a condition attached to one of the grants that helped pay for its publication.
As for the author, his time in north central Alberta is up. He’s off to Vancouver Island at the end of the month to take a position with a tourism marketing organization there.
Four Seasons on Lesser Slave Lake is available at Book ‘Em, on Main St. in Slave Lake.
