Slave Lake’s first baby of the New Year saw the light of day at 8:32 a.m. On Jan. 5 Samara Trisha Krewulak weighed in at eight pounds, five-and-three-quarter ounces and already had a full head of hair! That’s mom Trisha holding Samara next to dad Ken in the hospital room last Friday. Just visible behind them are a few of the many gifts donated by Slave Lake merchants for The Leader’s ‘First Baby of the New Year’ contest. Seventeen businesses pitched in with gifts ranging from gift baskets to blankets to shoes to gift certificates.

Slave Lake dialysis up and running
People requiring dialysis treatment will no longer have to travel outside Slave Lake to receive it. Slave Lake hospital received its first dialysis patients on the morning of Jan. 4, 2006.
Weather baffles experts, challenges industry
Ice roads in the far north of Alberta can’t open. Further south, there’s no snow for building temporary log haul stream crossings in the bush. More freezing rain than snow fell in northern Alberta during the month of December.

Wolves steal a bone from the top dogs
The Slave Lake Wolves play it pretty tough at home, especially on Saturday nights. This past Saturday (Jan. 7) they did it again, beating the top team in the league.
Winterhawks over Drayton
Slave Lake’s provincial champion Senior hockey team won a game in Drayton Valley on Saturday, despite only having 11 skaters. The Winterhawks defied the odds by coming back in the third period to get the job done.
