The Slave Lake visitor information centre is now open. Around 50 per cent of funding for the $1.1 million facility came from the provincial government with the Town of Slave Lake and the M.D. of Lesser Slave River picking up the rest. The building will house the Lesser Slave Lake Community Development Corporation and Big Lakes Country Tourism. On hand for the Jan. 27 grand opening from left to right, the Honourable Pearl Calahasen, M.D. 124 Reeve Denny Garratt, Slave Lake Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee, and Slave Lake Councilor George Snider.

Tory Brian Jean wins riding
To no one’s surprise, incumbent Conservative MP Brian Jean won re-election in the Ft. McMurray-Athabasca riding in the Jan. 23 federal election. He did even better than his first time out, polling 20,342 votes (unofficially), compared to 17,942 in the 2004 election.
Wabasca man charged in fatal crash
Charges have been laid regarding the fatal motor vehicle crash that happened Jan. 20, near Widewater, approximately 10 minutes west of Slave Lake.
Eating Creek methanol spill clean-up continues
Clean-up of the Jan 18 Eating Creek methanol spill continued last week. It will continue, says an Alberta Environment spokesperson, until the government is satisfied.
“We have instructed them to keep pumping until there’s no methanol left,” says David May.

If the Winterhawks get past the Fox Creek Bandits in the first round of the NCHL playoffs, they’ll probably face the Lamont Bruins for the North Division title. The Bruins (above, in black, playing the Winterhawks on Sunday) are the only team to have beaten the ‘Hawks this season.

Winterhawks win, playoffs begin Saturday
The Slave Lake Winterhawks closed out their regular season on Sunday, beating the Lamont Bruins 6 – 2. The only team to have beaten the ‘Hawks this season, the Bruins were at least competitive.
Wolves make Dogs work for their two points
One thing other NWJHL teams will have to admit about the Wolves as they take game after game from them down the stretch: the guys from Slave Lake make the other guys work for their two points.
