Going where the workers are
The Alberta Government may be working on a new strategy to fix the labour shortage, but some Slave Lake companies can’t wait. They’re going to where there’s a labour surplus, rounding up willing workers and bringing them back.
Emergency room wait times, costs, surge
The Slave Lake Hospital is having trouble keeping up with large numbers of non-emergency patients streaming into the emergency room. In the month of December alone, the emergency department handled more than 1,000 cases, a significant portion of which were of low priority. The heavy volume is limiting the staff’s ability to respond to minor injuries and illnesses.

Wolves beat Beaverlodge in overtime thriller
The Slave Lake Wolves picked up their second win of 2006 on Sunday, beating the visiting Beaverlodge Blades in the second period of overtime. Not many people showed up to see the game, but those who stuck around certainly got their money’s worth.
Modest victory for Winterhawks in playoff opener
The Slave Lake Winterhawks started their defense of their North Central Hockey League championship with a 6 – 2 road victory in Fox Creek against the Bandits on Feb. 4. It was a low-scoring affair by the ‘Hawks’ usual standards. In fact they had to come back against a determined opponent.
