A young team from Rainbow Lake swept down from the north to win the 42nd annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel. The Flint #1 crew, skipped by Chad Doepker, beat Klaus Enterprises of Sherwood Park 7 - 4 in the ‘A’ final to become the only undefeated team in the tournament.
In the ‘B’ final, Dale Krysta’s LOP rink beat Mike Skrynyk’s Diamond ‘S’ team by the same 7 - 4 score.
The Flint #2 outfit was not as lucky as their Flint #1 counterparts, falling 10 - 6 to the Silverline team in the ‘C’ final. Skipped by Monte Gregg, Silverline also had a couple of Rainbow Lakers, including Harold Norberg. This was the closest game of all the finals. A big final end by Silverline broke open what had been a very tight contest.
The ‘D’ final saw MI Production Chemicals, skipped by Rick Duchesnay, win by the popular score of 7 - 4 over Weatherford BMW.
The only runaway win of the five was the ‘E’ event, which saw GN Transportation of Ponoka (and elsewhere) hammer the Nicholson rink 7 - 1.
A lot of the talk around the rink Sunday was about a team of junior curlers that did very well, losing out in an ‘A’ event semi-final on Sunday. Scott Tradewell, Trevor Eben, Doug Severson, Evan Degenhardt and Kirk Ruecker won four straight games to start the tournament.
Overall, the 42nd Oilmen’s was a big success, says Petroleum Association President Chris Jones.
