Boxers win in Peace River

Slave Lake boxers went three and one at a card in Peace River on Mar. 18, continuing what looks to be a promising season for a group of new fighters. Tyral Tanghe, Dustin Pawliw and Krystal Schmidt were winners, while Jesse Schmidt lost a split decision.
A fifth boxer, Kyle Buchberger, had to settle for some sparring when his scheduled opponent didn’t show up.
Tanghe’s first amateur fight ended more quickly than his coach hoped it would.
“The fight was stopped 25 seconds into the first round,” says coach Lee Tanghe. “He gave him a bloody nose right away.”
That and a bloody lip was enough for the referee.
“It was a good result but we wanted him to get some work,” says Tanghe.
Jesse Schmidt, 17, went up against Jeremy Boos of Manning in the Intermediate 132 lb. division. It was the third fight for both and was “very entertaining,” Tanghe says.
With a bit of improvement, Schmidt can beat Boos, Tanghe says.
Dustin Pawliw, 19, faced 26-year-old Jordan Loughlin of Manning in the Senior 142 lb. class. Loughlin was undefeated in four fights – Pawliw had won his only fight so far.
“Dustin clearly out-boxed his opponent and won a unanimous decision,” Tanghe says. “(He’s) showing a lot of signs of maturity.”
Pawliw was named the card’s best Senior boxer.
The main event was a bout between Krystal Schmidt and Sheila Jonker of Peace River. Schmidt won a unanimous decision in what was the first fight for both.
“It was a very good bout,” says Tanghe “They were so tired.”
