Step forward or say goodbye to curling, says club ex-president

The Slave Lake Curling Club needs three good people. Or maybe even only two. If it doesn’t get them, curling could be in jeopardy.
That’s the ultimatum from ex-president Chris Jones, who stepped down last week after 2 ½ years as president and bar manager.
“We had our AGM the other night,” says Jones. “Out of 200 curlers we had 12 show up. We’ve got no president, or vice president or bar manager.
The board decided if these positions aren’t filled by September of this year we won’t be opening next year.”
In other news, the club decided to raise its fees for next season, to help cover the rising costs of running the place.
“We didn’t want to but we had to,” Jones says.
It costs about $90,000 to run the rink for a season. The club got through the 2005/06 season in decent financial shape, Jones says, thanks in part to $20,000 the club made by catering to Angler’s Cup and trappers’ convention functions last summer. Those won’t be happening this year, and the club would have to find other sources of funds.
Jones says the rink is in decent shape, having undergone some upgrades last year thanks to a grant. The club is currently looking for another grant to replace three rinks of rocks.
But will there be a club? That’s the big question.
