Minor soccer faces crisis

Minor soccer in Slave Lake has never been short of players, but volunteers to run the organization have been much harder to find. With the president and much of the executive stepping down this year, it’s a bigger challenge than usual.
At the annual meeting last week, not enough people showed up, or stepped forward, to make it possible to run the house leagues this season. Lacking is a president, a vice president and a treasurer, among other vital positions.
“Without those positions filled, we can’t run the league properly,” says outgoing president Kevin Morrison.
Morrison and his wife Pam have been on the executive for 10 years and are stepping down. It’s a struggle every year to find enough people, Pam says, but this year the house league season is in definite jeopardy.
“If nobody steps up there’s a big chance house league soccer won’t go this year,” she says.
The fewest kids in house league soccer in the past five years has been 310.
Minor Soccer has scheduled another meeting for Thursday, Mar. 30, at which it hopes to right the ship. Notices are going home with elementary and junior high students.
The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at Northern Lakes College. For more information call Kevin at 805-0570.
