CN Rail workers replace heat-warped steel on the bridge near downtown Slave Lake last Thursday morning. The bridge timbers were still strong enough to support a train, but the rails had to be replaced. Had the fire not been discovered in time, and the rail replaced, there could have been a bad derailment at the site.

Railway bridge burns, damage superficial
The railway trestle in Slave Lake was completely engulfed in flames last Thursday morning. Oddly enough, members of the Slave Lake Fire Department were nearby dealing with a grass fire when one of them noticed the burning bridge.

Rec/culture facility proposal looks nice, costs a bundle
Inflated construction costs are to be expected in the current Alberta economy. But even so, Slave Lake Town councillors seemed stunned last week when they heard how much a new indoor recreation facility might cost.

Time to hit your balls
The ground is spongy in places as the last of the winter snow melts but Gilwood Golf & Country Club is now open for the 2006 season. Good Friday saw the first wave of enthusiasts and sandbaggers hit the links.

And the winner is.....Manitoba 3?
Players in the Alimo’s Pizzaria Sweet 16 regular season NHL hockey pool by now are pretty familiar with the name Manitoba 3. It’s the team that shot into the lead a few months ago and never gave it up to the bitter end, winning by a whopping 27 points.
