Gloria Gatzke is Slave Lake’s Citizen of the Year for 2005. One of Slave Lake’s ‘super volunteers’ with a long record of hands-on involvement in a number of worthy organizations, Gloria earned the award from a field of very strong nominations. She serves as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, is vice-chair of the Northern Haven Support Society - the group seeking to establish a women’s shelter - and is also an advocate for Slave Lake’s Victim Services program.

M.D. approves casino amendment
Last week M.D. #124 council approved an application to amend its land use by-law to include the word ‘casino’. It did so with surprisingly little discussion, given the possibly controversial nature of the proposed business.
Fire hazard extreme: be careful
High temperatures, low humidity, wind and a spark. That’s all it takes to turn the forest into a raging inferno. Slave Lakers have seen it happen twice in recent years, and both times the spring was just like the one we’re having now.

Sports Highlights

Tori Lucius of the Slave Lake Indicas Synchronized Swimming Club gets airborne off the shoulders of Gabrielle Ball, who in turn is being lifted by three or four other swimmers out of sight under the water. It was just one of many skills demonstrated by the club at its 11th annual spring water show at the Northern Lights Aquatic Centre in Slave Lake on Sunday.
An overflow crowd packed the centre for the show, which featured several group routines as well as individual performances.
The Indicas had a good season, earning good results in various competitions including the Alberta Winter Games in February.
