Chamber of Commerce not broke

The good news is that Slave Lake’s Chamber of Commerce is not broke. And the very good news is that its coffers are brimming with bucks – sort of.
Chamber Chair Doug Babiy told members at the regular meeting last week that confusion in the financial report had resulted in Chamber officials thinking that their organization had suffered a financial blow last year. In fact, what the auditor’s report did not reveal was that income and distribution of funds for the 2004 Anglers’ Cup was spread out over three years so the loss in 2005 did not drain Chamber’s coffers. He said Chamber Assistant Annie Aarts discovered the confusion when she conducted her own post mortem on the books.
“So we’re not riding a sinking ship here,” Babiy said with a grin. And the Cup left a $23,000 legacy fund in its wake.
That said, however, the Chamber still needs its annual $13,900 grant from the Town, Aarts added. That should happen after the Chamber presents the Town with its list of accomplishments in coming weeks.
Member Joe Schultz asked Babiy if the Chamber has plans to wean itself of what he called a ‘subsidy’ from the municipality. Babiy replied that since the Chamber does not receive the income from business licenses, he expects it’ll always need some financial support.
“But we will try and streamline in the future, and we’re not touching the legacy fund.”
