Top Stories This Week - June 28, 2006

Construction at Tolko’s $250 million engineered wood products mill east of Slave Lake is proceeding, with steel up for the warehouse portion of the building, and foundation work commencing on the press line section. There were about 60 people employed on the site last week, and over 35,000 man hours have been expended to date. When the project reaches its peak period - probably sometime this coming winter, there will be 350 - 400 workers on the job. Hiring for the mill itself likely won’t begin until 2007.
Improvements to the five-kilometre road connecting the new mill to the Mitsue Industrial Park are coming up. Mill manager Heinz Zierl says the road “needs a considerable upgrade,” before the really heavy equipment starts coming in by the truckload – not to mention the timber hauling to come. Bidding on the road job was expected to close this week.
