Members of Slave Lake’s summer swim team competed in three events last month, bringing home medals of various colours.
First up was a June 9 meet in Grande Prairie, attended by 23 of the Slave Lake Sharks. Seven of them performed so well they won medals for place in the top three swimmers in their age groups over several races.
Brianna Ladouceur won gold in the Girls 6 & Under, Kyle Perrott won gold in the Boys 15 & 16, Courtney Schmode won gold in the Girls 17 & Over, Morgan Hogberg won gold in the Boys 17 & Over, Kirk Lukan-Ruecker won silver in the Boys 11 & 12, Brooke Verschoor won silver in the Girls 13 & 14 and Erik Labrie won bronze in the Boys 8 and Under.
One week later on June 16, 10 swimmers attended the Fairview Invitational Swim Meet, where Erik Labrie again won bronze aggregate for his age category. Labrie, Angel Quintal, Shawn Stephen and Robyn Chemago each received a personal best time ribbon, and Trevor Labrie and Devon Stephen bettered three of their times. Lindsey Chemago and Esther Saul swam very well in their first meet of the season, says coach Jacquie Labrie.
Shawn Stephen, Conor Keaveney, Trevor Labrie and Erik Labrie competed in the Boys 9 & 10 Medley and Freestyle relays and placed second in both events.
Most recently, on June 24, five swimmers represented Slave Lake at the High Level Invitation Swim Meet, bringing home four aggregate medals.
Erik Labrie won silver, Trevor Labrie won gold and Shawn Stephen won silver in the Boys 9 &10. Devon Stephen won Bronze in the Boys 13 & 14.
Shawn, Devon, Trevor and Erik competed in the boys 200 metre 17 & Over Medley and Freestyle relays and placed second in both.
Even the coaches got wet at the High Level meet, participating in a fun relay. The team of coach Patty Stephen, Shawn Stephen, Angel Quintal and High Level Stingray swimmer Karissa Chretien placed third overall.
