Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

Guess who's coming back to Slave Lake for a visit? Jan Jekielek, but this time he’s not bringing 16 kids from Canada, Poland and Ukraine to learn the culture and get involved in community development. It seems that since Jan last chaperoned a group of Canada World Youth participants here, he’s been traveling extensively as a photojournalist and a human rights advocate. Back in Alberta for a visit, he’s set up a slide show in Slave Lake, in conjunction with the Slave Lake Adult Education Committee.
It’s called Around the World in 80 Slides: An Evening with Photojournalist and Human Rights Advocate Jan Jekielek.
Jan’s slides will cover his visits to Poland, Ukraine, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Germany, England, Israel, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Bali, Sri Lanka, Thailand, “and some lesser-known corners of Canada and the USA, such as Newfoundland.”
The presentation is on Sunday, July 16 at Northern Lakes College.

Jo Masur was in the office the other day with some additional information to go along with the story we ran on June 21 about the blue heron rookery in Faust. She was the real estate agent who was trying to sell the 14 acre parcel for the owner, but because of the heron nests, it was proving difficult, if not impossible. In the end a perfect solution was found, but not without a lot of work, Jo says. The solution involved selling the land to the Alberta Conservation Association, but they had to come up with the market price for the land, and it wasn’t cheap. That’s when Suncor stepped in with a big donation. The owner kicked a chunk of the price back into the project too, Jo says.

The Sinclair family is having a reunion (of sorts) this coming weekend, July 7-9 at the Widewater Ball Park. Everybody is welcome, not just family members.
Registration takes place Friday from noon til 8:00 p.m. and is just five bucks. With scheduled events including jigging and moose calling contests, Sinclair Idol, a three-legged race, and a baseball game, it promises to be a memorable event.
Read next week’s Leader for a wrap-up and pictures from the weekend-long party.
Call Evelyn at 849-3009, Len at 849-4791, or Joey at 849-4892 for more information.

Ed Mason in the 630 CHED newsroom delivers the weekly gas update:
The wholesale price of gasoline in Edmonton jumped two cents overnight to 76.5. (that’s an eight cent increase since last Friday) The average posted pump price is holding at 107.9. Wholesale diesel is up nine tenths of a penny to 71.4.
Isn’t it strange, or perhaps not, that gas prices generally soar just before a long weekend? Coincidence, we think not! * * * * *
July 1st was the first official day of a six per cent good and services tax. Just to put a little perspective on what that could mean at the cash register...
Saving $250 off the price of a $25,000 automobile or one penny off the price of a $1.38 cup of coffee.
It doesn’t seem like such a big deal in that regard. However, some businesses struggled to re-program their machines. Some even had to order new registers. The trials hardly seem worth it for one per cent. Maybe the feds should have aimed for a higher number. Say... seven per cent.

With the celebration of Dominion Day back in 1879, 12 years after the fact, Canada turned 139 young last weekend. Happy birthday!
