Slave Lake’s Bantam boys baseball team put in a respectable showing at the Bantam A2 provincial championship tournament in Wetaskiwin on the July 22 weekend. They lost their first, won their second and lost their third.
The first game was on the Friday night, against the Team Alberta Bantam girls team. This is an all-star team put together for the purpose of competing at the Canada Summer Games.
“They beat us 14 – 8,” says Heat coach Lee Tanghe.
The girls’ pitcher was very tough to hit against, Tanghe says. “She was one of the best pitchers at the tournament.”
On Saturday the Heat faced Sherwood Park and it was a different story.
“The bats came alive,” Tanghe says. “Defence was phenomenal. Everything came together.
The score was 13 – 1 for Slave Lake in five innings.
The win kept the Heat alive for Sunday, when they met the host Wetaskiwin team. This time, nothing was working.
“Just too many errors,” Tanghe says. “The boys were dragging.”
The final score was 17 – 6 for Wetaskiwin.
The Heat played 29 games altogether this summer, winning 11 and losing 18. Tanghe says the team improved tremendously along the way.
“Overall it was a successful year,” he says.
