The Leader's message board at lakesideleader.com is back in business – having been recently reborn in a new format. The old board was not terribly busy, but it did serve as a place for people to post questions and comments about Slave Lake and was useful in that regard. It wasn’t that easy to use though, and there were frequent problems. We’re hoping the new format will be easier for folks to navigate and easier also for us to manage.

Lisa Varga is a woman on a mission. She wants to raise $775 for cancer research before her high school graduation on Aug. 12.
“My grandfather passed away in May, of a long battle of cancer,” she says.
Lisa’s going to shave her head one way or another, she says, but wants to reach that $775 goal. To make a pledge call Lisa at the Town of Slave Lake at 849-8007.

There’s quite the shindig happening down at Flatbush this weekend. It’s the Flatbush Homecoming #3, from Aug. 4 – 7. That seems to suggest it’s for people who live or used to live in Flatbush, but we suspect they wouldn’t mind a visit from the odd non-Flatbusher. So if you like pancake breakfasts, antiques, garage sales, poker rallies, dancing, shiny cars, frying pan tosses, silent auctions, chili cook-offs and much, much more, consider dropping down to the complex or one of the other venues. See the schedule on Page 21 of this week’s Leader.

Here’s an idea. But first a bit of history.
The Pure Nature Crew has mounted clean-up campaigns around Slave Lake the past couple of years. Their first major project was to organize the removal of a lot of illegally dumped trash out in the dunes, or jackpines, area northeast of town. Then they tackled a spot on the south shore where outlaw dumpers had been tipping trash over down a hill above the lake for years. In both cases this committed group of volunteers did a great job and a great service to the community.
This year? According to Jule Asterisk, they haven’t found anything!
How about this? Tackle Sawridge Creek below each of the bridges in town. There are enough bicycles, shopping carts, signs, furniture and all manner of other crap in the creek to warrant an all-out campaign. It might require the removal of a couple of beaver dams to get at it, but so much the better.
Something to think about.

Our man in the 630 CHED news room on vacation but that doesn’t mean we cannot talk about gasoline.
Most stations jacked up prices by a dime last Wednesday. Slave Lakers and Edmontonians are all paying around 114.9 cente per litre .
Consider it a small comfort. Stations in Labrador are selling it for 127.
The national average (as of July 25) was 112.8.
And all this after sweet crude oil fell a dollar.
