Lightning kills four cows
The thunder and lightning storm that started late in the evening on Aug. 22 wreaked havoc at Lakeside Ranch in Hondo. Several cows had sought shelter from the storm in a stand of trees a few hundred yards from the farmhouse.

Census scare for Town council
As of quite recently, more than a third of Slave Lake residents had not responded to the federal census. That’s the news that the Town of Slave Lake’s Director of Finance Julia Seppola shared with Town council at council’s Aug. 15 meeting.

Forty-first annual Oilmen’s golf tournament exceeds expectations
Sunny skies and 18 holes made for good golfing at the 41st annual Oilmen’s golf tournament held at Gilwood Golf and Country Club on Aug. 18 and 19. Event organizer Chris Jones of the Slave Lake Petroleum Association (SLPA) is happy to report that with 155 registered participants, things were a little better than expected.

Sharks go up against the big competition at provincials
Seven members of the Slave Lake Sharks swim club competed in the Alberta Summer Swimming Association Provincial Championship in Calgary on the Aug. 19 weekend. They did well, too, competing against nearly 900 other swimmers from 58 member clubs.
