McWilliams Lakeside Leader The Slave Lake Winterhawks’ first home win of the season wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty. Both teams struggled to fit into the new zero-tolerance rules that the league adopted this year. In the first period, for example, the home team had more penalties than shots on goal. But after the poor start, the ‘Hawks found a way to put the puck in the net a few times, and won it by an 8 – 4 score.
Ryan Dierker had a big game for the Winterhawks. Showing the form that for years made him the top scorer on every team and in every league he ever played in. Dierker dissected the Hinton defence and when he shot the puck, it was where their goalie wasn’t. He ended up with three goals and two assists.
Brian Bouchard, the allegedly retired Winterhawks’ captain, was back for the second game in a row and again scored a pair of goals.
Hinton led 2 – 1 after the first period, in which the ‘Hawks looked like some other team that had stolen the Winterhawk jerseys. A lot of the spectators blamed it all on the reffing, but there was definitely more to it than that.
However in the second period a more familiar squad showed up and popped in three goals for a 4 – 2 lead. One of them was scored by newcomer Justin Menard. Four more goals in the third made it a Slave Lake show going away.
Calvin Beauchamp had a decent game in goal for the Winterhawks, turning away 32 of 36 shots. Richard Clark in the Hinton net allowed eight goals on 27 shots.
This Saturday the Winterhawks play the Legal Vipers in Legal for the first time ever. Their next home game is on Nov. 12 against the Lamont Bruins.
