Wolves big on Sunday

If it wasn’t for Sexsmith on Sundays the Slave Lake Wolves wouldn’t have any wins this season. They made it three Sunday wins over the Vipers in a row on Oct. 29, topping the hometowners 6 – 5 in a stunning third-period comeback.
“I was telling them we should play all our games on Sunday in Sexsmith,” jokes Wolves Coach Scott Sinclair, “because we never seem to lose.”
Things didn’t look all that promising when the Wolves limped into Sexsmith Sunday morning after losing 7 – 4 (again) to the Fort St. John Huskies. They were missing their top goalie, two veteran defencemen and two of their best forwards, either to injuries or work commitments
The Wolves were relying rather heavily on rookies. Down by two goals to the high-scoring Vipers going into the third period, they did not fold up their tents.
“We scored two shorthanded goals on the same penalty,” says Sinclair. “I don’t know if I’ve seen that before.”
Who did the scoring is unclear thanks to an unreadable game sheet. But who was in goal is very clear.
Ryan Bardoel played extremely well,” says Sinclair.
Bardoel was between the pipes for the Wolves the night before too. Sinclair says the Huskies went quickly up 3 – 0 and the Wolves had to play catch-up the rest of the way. They made a game of it, but came up three goals short.
“It’s tough to come back from a 3 – 0 deficit, especially in that building,” he says.
This weekend the Wolves are at home for a pair of games against the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks. The Canucks beat the Wolves 6 – 4 in their only previous meeting this season.
“I think they’ll be one of the top teams this season,” Sinclair says.
