Slave Lake, Alberta

Wolves drop two at home

Joe McWilliams

If there was ever a weekend when the Slave Lake Wolves had a better than average chance at picking up four points, this was it. But they came up short against two of the weaker teams in the league, losing to the Peace River Navigators and Beaverlodge by one goal.
The conditions looked good for a breakthrough. Injured goalie Michael Kashuba was back, as was Chad Paulson from a wrist injury. Adding to the favorable conditions was the number of penalties, which favored the Wolves in both games.
But the Wolves were out-shot in both games, and out-scored 4 – 3 by Peace River Friday and 3 – 2 by Beaverlodge on Sunday.
The Wolves had some quality time in the Peace River zone in the first period of Friday’s game – thanks to Navigator penalties – but could not score. Peace River got the only goal of that period off a goalmouth scramble.
The Wolves scored the first of their three powerplay goals early in the second. Michael Zinyk got it, 1:56 in. The Navigators answered later in the period to restore their one goal lead.
Peace River took a 3 – 1 lead at the top of the final period, but the Wolves answered midway with two goals in nine seconds, one by Nick Plourde and the other by Zinyk. The Navigators scored the winner with 5:26 left.
Sunday’s game followed a similar pattern. Beaverlodge scored the only goal of the first period. Slave Lake answered with one by Al Beaulac in the second and the Blades re-took the lead late in the second. Kiel Ching tied it in the third until, with 22 seconds left, Beaverlodge got the winner.
