Police and emergency services raced to the scene of a single vehicle rollover on Hwy #754 Dec. 14 approximately 40 kms north of Slave Lake. It was just after 4:30 p.m. when the call came in.
A westbound 1995 Ford Explorer spun on some black ice while negotiating a bend in the road. The SUV left the road on the right-hand side and rolled. It came to rest in the north ditch.
Police say that two of the three occupants were thrown from the vehicle while the third was trapped within. The driver, 31, of Wabasca, was ejected and died on the scene.
Two female passengers aged 23 and 76, both of Wabasca, were transported to the Slave lake Health Complex for treatment of minor injuries. None of the three was wearing a seatbelt.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and no charges were being considered at press time.
Police would like to remind all motorists to wear their seatbelts and respect road conditions.
This death is the ninth automotive fatality since January 2005 in the Slave Lake – Desmarias area.
Police record the number of deaths and serious injuries that result from car crashes. This particular death will be recorded under two categories: unbelted and speed.
