Calen Faye Cunningham is Slave Lake’s New Year’s Baby, having come into the world at 9:51 a.m. on Jan. 2 weighing 7 lbs. 9 oz. Mom Ashley Gambler and baby Calen were resting comfortably on Jan. 3 when The Leader showed up with a variety of gifts from Slave Lake merchants who participated in The Leader’s Firstborn of 2007 Contest.

Back home in the Philippines, Edmar Estacio worked as a concierge in a five-star Manila hotel. Not a bad job, you would think, being in a top hotel in the capital city.

Charges considered in one of three highway accidents
Slave Lake RCMP responded to three separate motor vehicle accidents in the middle of December. The first occurred at 4:00 p.m. on Dec. 13 approximately 11 kms north of town on Hwy #88. A northbound pickup truck attempted to pass a northbound car.

Winterhawks look good on the road

Two big road wins for the Slave Lake Winterhawks on the weekend sets them up nicely for games this weekend at home against what may be the best two teams in the league. Onoway and Drayton Valley are coming to town and it should be some of the best hockey anyone has seen in Slave Lake this year.



Wolves squeeze three points out of Beaverlodge

Two good periods of hockey usually isn’t enough for the Slave Lake Wolves, but on Saturday against Beaverlodge it was. The Wolves dominated in the first, stunk in the second and came back with four goals in the third to beat the Blades 5 – 2.
