Tolko closes mill
What was planned as a six-week shutdown is now a complete closure. Tolko Industries Slave Lake OSB mill is closing its doors indefinitely, citing a continually poor market - low prices, and diminished demand.
Chipewyan Lake area oil sands project moving to next stage
What’s known in coffee shops as ‘the Shell project’ is still a long way from fruition, but things are happening. Sure Northern Energy – which Royal Dutch Shell owns – is planning a series of community open houses in affected communities early next month to talk about what they’ve been up to. And what they’ll likely be doing in the year to come.
It’s official: Slave Lake population hardly grew in the past five years
The results are in from the 2006 federal census and it is exactly as some municipal politicians feared. Populations do not seem to come close to reflecting actual growth.

Atom Thunder beat Barrhead, win league
Slave Lake’s Atom Thunder completed a nearly perfect season on Sunday by winning the their Sturgeon Pembina ‘A’ League title. They did it by coming back after an opening game loss to Barrhead on Mar. 15 in the best-of-three series.
Flatbush youth wins provincial wrestling title
Erik Galliford wasn’t planning on making a trip to Ontario anytime soon. But after attending the Alberta Open provincial wrestling championships earlier this month, he suddenly has a date in Whitby, Ontario next month.
