Atom Thunder beat Barrhead, win league

Slave Lake’s Atom Thunder completed a nearly perfect season on Sunday by winning the their Sturgeon Pembina ‘A’ League title. They did it by coming back after an opening game loss to Barrhead on Mar. 15 in the best-of-three series.
That first loss was in overtime – a tough way to start the series and perhaps a wake-up call to a team that had not lost once during the regular season.
In the second game last Friday the Thunder played a better defensive game and won 5 – 0. That set up Sunday’s final at the Arctic Ice Centre. A good crowd watched the local boys play an excellent game, getting the better of Barrhead by a 9 – 1 score.
The game was pretty close for quite some time. The Thunder led 2 – 1 after one period and 4 – 1 after two. In the third they pulled away with a game of relentless forechecking that led to good scoring opportunities – mostly for Thomas Foster, who ended up with six of his team’s nine goals.
Defensively, the Thunder made it very tough for the Barrhead skaters to get anywhere near the net with the puck on their sticks, especially in the latter stages of the game. When they did, goalie Jiles Ladouceur was there to make the big save.
Also scoring for the Thunder were Brayden Stasow, Laine Sheldon-Houle and Matthew Waters.
