Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

Alberta Environment confirms what everybody pretty much knows – that there’s a lot of snow out there. According to the government it’s a record amount for north central Alberta. They’ve been keeping such records for only 35 years, apparently, and in 20 of 43 testing locations, they measured the highest or second highest snowpack in that period. In consequence, Environment is predicting heavy runoffs from Grande Prairie across to Lloydminster.

How about Bessie Roffey turning 110? It seems just the other day she reached the century mark, and that was when she was still living in her Kinuso home! Now she’s in the nursing home in High Prairie, where her 110th was celebrated with due ceremony. Back when Mrs. Roffey was turning 99, someone called The Leader advising us of the fact and suggesting an interview was in order, because she might not last much longer. Little did they know! The interview was a bit tough on account of her partial deafness, but that didn’t stop her from making her points forcefully. ‘I’ve got a .22 rifle here and I know how to use it!’ she said.
Mrs. Roffey’s story is a long one. She remembers watching a coronation parade in London, England, from her father’s shoulders, in 1902 or thereabouts.
At 110, she’s apparently Alberta’s oldest resident and if she lives much longer she’ll probably become Canada’s oldest. Happy Birthday Mrs. Roffey!

Here’s something you might like to know. The town of Slave Lake is holding an open house on the indoor recreation facility study. A consultant has been working on concepts for a new rec centre that might include a rebuilt or replaced old arena, a multi-use field house with a running track and other rooms and possibly a few other things. The dates are March 29 (4 - 9 p.m. with the consultants) and 30 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m. With town staff) at town council chambers. Call the town for more info.
