You’ll have to wait until May 1 to get your hands on this new petunia variety. That’s when Ladybug Greenhouse opens in Widewater, but The Leader dropped by for a sneak preview last week and owner Ted Cofer pointed out this early-blooming ‘plum-veined’ petunia.

M.D. looks for sewer cash for southshore project
The Municipal District of Lesser Slave River is getting ready to launch the final stages of its wastewater collection system to the Southshore communities, with plans to bore into Widewater, Wagner and Nine Mile Point homes within the year.

Alberta Environment investigating Tolko trash burn
The province is investigating a charge of ‘inappropriate burning’ at the Tolko construction site near Slave Lake. The charge came from an unnamed source at the construction site, likely the same one that called The Leader about it on Apr. 4.

It’s official: Slave Lake population hardly grew in the past five years
The results are in from the 2006 federal census and it is exactly as some municipal politicians feared. Populations do not seem to come close to reflecting actual growth.

Minor soccer ready to kick off new season

Outdoor soccer is ready to kick off for another season on the week of April 30th. The Slave Lake Minor Soccer Association is expecting upwards of 250 or 300 players in the house league in various age groups. Anyone born from 1991 to 2002 is eligible to play in the house league. In addition, there will be various travel teams who will compete in tournaments in Edmonton and area. Anyone born from 1989 to 1996 can play on a travel team.



Return to recreation for southshore

A group of Southshore residents and recreation buffs is hoping to put a good-news face on a bad news pine beetle infestation that’s allegedly eating its way toward northern Alberta forests. And at the same time, they could be helping to create some major recreation opportunities in their area too.
