For the Lakeside Leader
Outdoor soccer is ready to kick off for another season on the week of April 30th. The Slave Lake Minor Soccer Association is expecting upwards of 250 or 300 players in the house league in various age groups. Anyone born from 1991 to 2002 is eligible to play in the house league. In addition, there will be various travel teams who will compete in tournaments in Edmonton and area. Anyone born from 1989 to 1996 can play on a travel team.
Registration is being taken at Sports First on Main Street downtown. Parents are urged to register in good time so that the soccer club can create the teams in time for play on April 30th. A late fee applies after April 23rd.
As always, the soccer club highly values the assistance of parents and enthusiastic teens in coaching. A 2-hour coaching clinic will be offered near the start of the season to help coaches get ready. A parent who coaches will be refunded half the player fee for one child.
New this year – a referee workshop is offered on the weekend of April 28th and 29th at Northern Lakes College. If the soccer club and its supporters can develop some refereeing expertise, the quality of the game will move to a higher level. The club is willing to pay the $100 fee for anyone who will attend the workshop and referee some games. This is a great opportunity for both youth and adults alike. If you are interested, please contact the association president, Nick Williams, at 849-5153.
Finally, have you been confused about the rules of soccer? Well you can clear up any mysteries by coming to a free clinic called “Laws of the Game” on the evening of April 27th at NLC. The club would like to wish all the players, coaches and parents a great soccer season!
