Contrary to the latest rumours, the Bluesky refinery project near McLennan has not been shelved, abandoned or even postponed. So says Don Allan, one of the Peace River Oil honchos, who returned The Leader’s call last Wednesday. It seems the company’s website had disappeared, leading at least one speculator to conclude something was ‘up.’ Nothing’s up, Allan said. The website went down Tuesday morning and was still down on Wednesday. He blamed Telus. In fact, the Bluesky project is already underway, with $5 million having been invested in renovating an old ammonia plant at the site near McLennan. A $2 billion refinery is still on the drawing boards, and Allan hinted at yet another aspect of the project to be announced sometime soon. He chuckled at the rumour that Bluesky might have been shelved, saying it’s not the first false rumour he’s heard about his project. Even A power failure in High Prairie was supposed to be our fault, he said. Allan said the next order of business is the construction of a rail spur to the site.

We had more photos than places to put them this week, so if you are among those expecting to see your smiling mug (or somebody else’s) in the paper, it’ll probably be in next week’s Leader.

One picture we didn’t take (but maybe we will) is the disgusting state of the parking area overlooking town, next to the cemetery. The other day it was littered with Tim Horton’s cups, Kentucky Fried Chicken boxes, McDonald’s containers, beer cans and other junk. Tourist attraction for the pretty view? Forget about it!

Aboriginal Day celebrations are creeping up. It’s on June 21, as always. Stacy Kirtio of the Friendship Centre alerted us to the fact when she called on Friday. The organizers usually put together a pretty good line-up of events and we expect the same this year. We’ll provide details as they come in.

And finally we could use this space to whine about the price of gas at some local pumps last week.
Following the lead of other stations across the province (honestly!), gas prices vaulted past the $1.20 per litre mark.
But we’re choosing to stop and count the roses that Mothers in this area enjoyed on their special day. In fact Carla over at Special Moments tells us that they went through 1,500 ‘stems’ this Mother’s Day.
And Rose over at Flowers by Rose says they used ‘lots’ of the sweet smelling symbols of love and appreciation last weekend.
