The Widewater Eagles reclaimed the Southshore league title in a one-day playoff tournament on July 21. The Eagles did it by first beating the Wabasca Indians and then knocking off the defending champion Boss Pressure Red Sox in the final.
In the two semi-final games, the Red Sox beat the Cardinals 11 – 5 and the Eagles beat Wabasca 4 – 1.
“It was a really good game,” says Brian Bouchard of the Eagles.
Scotty Sinclair was the winning pitcher. Bouchard and Richard Prah were strong at the plate, getting three hits apiece. In the final game, the Eagles jumped all over Sox pitcher Trevor Vance, scoring five times in the first inning. The Sox never overcame that, despite home runs by Vance and Garth Lacombe.
For the Eagles, Brent Blachford was the winning pitcher, as well as the player who delivered a three-run homer.
The season was a struggle for at least two of the teams, due to a nagging lack of players. One of them – Boss Pressure – is calling it quits.
“We won’t be back next year,” says Keith Sinclair of the Red Sox. “It was such a struggle to round up players every game. Too much of a hassle.”
