Don’t forget the Art Walk this Friday and Saturday at the visitor info centre out on the highway. It’ll be the first of its kind in Slave Lake - at least in recent memory - and it would be nice if Sarah and the gang over there get good support for it.

The Leader said goodbye to reporter Doug Beattie last week. He’s off to work at the new Tolko mill - apparently they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Doug was a well-liked guy around the office and the community. He was (and is) especially popular in of Smith, thanks to his extensive and positive coverage of people, events, issues and organizations of that community. We’ll still cover Smith, but unfortunately not to the same degree that Doug was able to, being a resident there and knowing so many people. Perhaps he’ll keep us posted on the hot topics from down the way. We wish Doug all the best in his new career.

Meanwhile, finding a new reporter isn’t the easiest task in the world. But we should have somebody on the job in a week or two, if everything works out. Ex-editor Marilyn Richer will be pitching in to help out a bit in the meantime, along with one or two others.

Holiday Inn and a Shell station? Is that what we’re getting across from Canadian Tire and Tim Horton’s? That’s what somebody told us, but we’ve had nothing from official sources.

When was the last time somebody caught a 14-lb. fish in Lesser Slave Lake? Well, maybe it happens every day and nobody tells us about it. But it does seem unusual. Tony Gellings says one of his party caught a jackfish (pike) that size last week out in the lee of Nine Mile Point somewhere. Of course they were after walleye, but still, a 14-pounder is something to talk about.

The Senior Day report from Gilwood came in a bit too late for inclusion in the regular spot this week, so we’ll squeeze it in here. Nineteen players turned out for the competition, which was won by Wayne Urchyshyn with a score of 43. Winning other prizes were Vi Baird (long putt on #2), Fred Walde (long putt on #5), Donna Anderson (closest to the pin on #3), Sandy Larson (closest chip on #9) and Glen Fromme (draw prize).

Do you feel like riding a quad to raise money for little kids? Then mark Saturday Aug. 11 on your calendar. The Smith Early Intervention Association (Smith Playschool) is hosting its first ever poker rally fundraiser. The cost is $10 per hand or three for $20.
With other prizes available (such as a ride in the sky courtesy of Slave Lake Helicopters) and entertainment to follow at the Wildcat Saloon, the playschool is hoping to raise $1,000 to continue teaching kids age 3 - 5 through interactive games.
