Harry Bartlett came in very late last week with news about Lanny McDonald’s visit this Wednesday and Thursday. What’s new is Lanny will be at Roland Michener School at 2:45 p.m. On Wednesday, and then on Thursday morning at 10 will play a hockey game with a selected group of locals. So come on down!

Sandra Mackay was by the office the other day to remind us about Tim Horton’s annual Smile Cookie program, which is coming up again Oct. 1 – 7. This is a fundraiser in which 100 per cent of the sales of the special smile cookies goes to a charity of choice. In this case, it’s the regional fire service, to be put towards equipment for the new rescue unit. Sandra says members of the fire department will be at Timmy’s from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for three days – Monday Oct. 1 – Wednesday, Oct. 3.

Two election ads came in past the deadline last week. One was from the Town O’SL announcing a couple of questions that will be on the ballot in the upcoming municipal election, and the other was from the M.D. of Opportunity, announcing the candidates for M.D. Council.
Both ads appear on Page 32 of this paper, but in case you missed them, here’s some of the info. The town wants to know if voters support the reduction of the speed limit on Hwy. 2 through town from 80 kph to 60 kph. The other question the town would like answered is whether voters support the notion of clearing more of Devonshire Beach. Currently, the province only allows something like 400 metres to be groomed.
The results are not binding on council, but they’d really like to know what people think.
The M.D. of Opportunity has 21 people running for council and four for reeve. The 21 council candidates sounds like a lot, but not when you consider it’s a 10-member body. Longtime reeve Paul Sinclair is getting a challenge from David Zabot, Stonewall Jackson and Robin Guild.
We don’t have room here to list all the council candidates, so turn to Page 32 for that. There are seven wards in the M.D., and two (Peerless Lake and Chipewyan Lake) have only one candidate. Ward 1 (Wabasca has six vying for three positions. Ward 2 (Calling Lake) has only two council seats but six competing for them. Good luck to all!
