Wolves lose to Fort St. John, beat Beaverlodge Blades

A victory on the season’s opening weekend could be just the tonic the Slave Lake Wolves needed. It’s good news for the fans too, who should turn out this weekend in decent numbers to see the hometown Jr. ‘B’ team take on the Sexsmith Vipers.
The victory came in the second game of the season, in Beaverlodge on Sunday. After a 4 – 0 defeat at the hands of the Fort St. John Huskies, the Wolves overcame the Blades 4 – 3 in overtime.
“It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it,” says coach Scotty Sinclair.
Tyson Price was the OT opportunist, scoring his second goal of the game. He had also opened the scoring in a first period dominated by the Blades, but led by the Wolves 2 – 0. Joe Cunningham scored the other Slave Lake goal.
In the second, the Wolves went south and the Blades went north, scoring three times to make it a 3 – 2 game for the home side.
Sinclair says he “tore a strip” off his players between periods and they responded. Shawn Lovelace scored with 2:10 left in the period to tie it up and send it into overtime.
“All four of our goals were scored by guys under 18, which is kind of crazy,” says Sinclair. Billy Beaudry played very well in net, says the coach.
Chris Gullett stopped 49 shots (if the scorekeeper was correct) in Saturday’s game in Fort St. John. The Wolves were outplayed, but Sinclair says he’s pleased with the effort. The score was close until near the end of the third and if the Wolves had been able to do something on the powerplay, it might have been even closer.
“It was a pretty good game,” Sinclair says.
The Wolves were missing four players due to injury and on
