Pillay-Kinnee returned as Slave Lake mayor
Incumbent Slave Lake mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee earned re-election on Oct. 15. She defeated challenger Chris Jones by 201 votes – 731 – 530.

Bigstone deal $300 million, 140,000 acres
After many decades of negotiations, the Bigstone Cree Nation finally has a land and benefits deal with the federal and provincial governments. It’s not ratified, but the parties have agreed in principal on a settlement of $299.5 million and 56,658 hectares, or 140,000 acres of land.

New look on M.D. #124 council
In the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River, three incumbent councillors were re-elected in the Oct. 15 municipal election. Joining Tim Walmsley, Darcie Acton and Brian Rosche are Debbie Parsons, Garry Horton and Michael Skrynyk.

Wolves’ goalie Billy Beaudry snags a high shot in Saturday’s game against the Peace River Navigators. The Wolves were right in the game until late in the third when Peace River got three power play goals.

Boxing provincials here this weekend

Eight local boxers will be competing in the provincial championships in Slave Lake this weekend. They’ll join pugilists from 30 or 40 other clubs around the province – many of them attempting to use the tournament as a springboard to the nationals.
